Group for radionuclide metrology is a part of Laboratory for nuclear and plasma physics. RML was founded in 1956.
Laboratory for Nuclear and Plasma Physics is certified and authorized for gamma spectroscopic measurements in environmental samples, according to a quality management system ISO 17020.
RML Group is active under the project 141019 B of Ministry of Science of RS.
Main task was establishing and developing of absolute and relative methods for measuring of alpha, beta and gamma radioemitters.
Present activities of our laboratory are concerned with absolute and relative radioactivity measurements, as well as measurement of environmental samples. These activities include also preparation of different samples in radiochemical laboratory. In Laboratory, certified materials (IAEA, CMI) to perform calibration of our instruments are routinely used.
Measurement instrumentation
- EGPC 1221 ENERTEC-Schlumberger HPGe semiconductor spectrometer, for quantitative and qualitative measurements of gamma emitters in environmental samples
- Canberra 802 – 4WNaI(Tl) scintillation spectrometer, for preliminary measurements of gamma emitters
- 4π αβ proportional gas flow counter (home-made); Measurement uncertainty for thin sources is less then ± 0.5 % and up to ± 2 % for thick alpha sources. For beta sources this uncertainty is less then ± 1 % for high energy and less then ± 4 % for low energy emitters.
- Canberra 7401 alpha spectrometer, silicon surface Barrier Detector
- Bicron 3M.125PP/3M-X ZnS scintillation counter, for measurement of gross alpha activity and specific alpha activity of thick sources
- Ortec 916 MCA,
- Genie 2000 software
Radiochemical laboratory
- Radiochemical separation of radioisotopes
- Preparation of electroplated alpha spectroscopic sources
- Preparation of spiked standards used for developing of new methods, and calibration of the aparatures
- Pretreatment of environmental samples (drying, evaporation, ashing, homogenization)
The mission of Laboratory is research and development, and measurements of radioactivity in the environment. Laboratory for Nuclear and Plasma Physics is certified and authorized for gamma spectroscopic measurements in environmental samples, according to a quality management system ISO 17020. Validity and accuracy of the methods in use (for different matrices and radionuclides) were confirmed through successful participation in the several intercomparison exercises organized by IAEA (Radionuclides in Irish Sea Sediment, IAEA – 385, 2002) and IRMM (Uranium, plutonium and cesium isotopic ratios in saline medium, NUSIMEP 5, 2005, Isotopic abundances of uranium in nitric acid solution REIMEP 18, 2006).
