Chemical Analyses

Analytical Techniques

Lab 060 is equipped for routine and specialized analyses of inorganic and organic constituents, which are performed using classical wet chemistry and instrumental procedures on a variety of sample types, including: environmental, biological, food, pharmaceutical, and industrial materials. Several instrumental techniques: inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES), flame, hydride-generation/cold vapor and graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry (F-, HG/CV-, GF-AAS), energy-dispersive x-ray fluorescence spectrometry (EDXRF), gamma spectrometry (GRS), gas chromatography (GC), and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) are applied for detection and quantification of analytes in liquid, solid and gaseous samples.

The techniques are usually used according to the following list:

    • F-AAS: Li, Co, Na, Mg, Mn, Zn, Cu, …

    • GF-AAS: Cd, Pb, As, Se, Al, …

    • CV-AAS: Hg ; HG-AAS: As, Sb, Se, …

    • ICP-AES: W, Ti, Al, Si, B, …

    • EDXRF: all elements from Al to U in periodic table

    • GRS: g-ray emitting elements (Cs-137, Cs-134, I-131, Ba-140, …)

    • GC: volatile and semi-volatile organic compounds (pesticides, phenols, PAH …)

    • HPLC: nonvolatile organic compounds (pesticides, additives, …)

Most analytes can be analyzed by two or more techniques. All the analyses described in the text are performed in Lab 060.

In addition, there are all needed apparatus, glassware, and chemicals for sample handling, wet chemistry, as well as for various physico-chemical measurements.

Analytical Methods

Analysis is performed following AOAC, EPA, ISO, APHA, ASTM, DOE, NIOSH, OSHA and JUS procedures, as well as procedures from other international organizations or from scientific literature.

Results

All data are validated against the acceptance criteria specified by the appropriate standard operating procedures. Analytical results are reported by phone, fax or e-mail as soon as they become available. A hard copy report follows by mail. Regular Service is provided in approximately 6 business days from the date of sample receipt. Analysis completion time varies with the sample type, handling requirements, and tests requested.
